Why sizing matters in a humid climate

Bigger isn’t better. An oversized system cools the air quickly and shuts off before it has run long enough to pull moisture out, which can leave a home feeling cool but clammy. An undersized system may run nonstop and still fall behind on the hottest afternoons. Good sizing looks at the space itself: its size, insulation, windows, sun exposure and how it’s used.

• Placement and mounting. Outdoor units can be set on a solid pad or a raised stand, depending on the site.
• Salt air. If you’re near the beach, the Intracoastal or a canal, ask about coastal-proofing your new outdoor unit before corrosion has a chance to start.
• Drainage. A new system pulls a lot of water out of the air, so the condensate drain needs to be routed and set up properly.
